When should my dog wear earmuffs?

Do dogs tolerate earmuffs?

Yes — most dogs do, but it’s completely normal if your dog tries to shake them off at first.


When dogs wear earmuffs for the first time, they may:

  • shake their head

  • paw at the earmuffs

  • try to remove them

This is a natural reaction to something new on their head. Just like with a harness or collar, dogs need time to learn that the earmuffs are safe and comfortable.

At the beginning, it can feel a bit tedious to adjust or put them back in place — but this phase passes. With calm introduction and repeated short sessions, dogs usually learn to tolerate and even accept the earmuffs.

Consistency is key, and it’s worth it — especially when it helps your dog stay calmer and protected in stressful situations.

Will my dog still hear me?

Yes — your dog will still hear you.

ARPAW earmuffs are designed to reduce loud and stressful sounds, and in some cases distant noises such as fireworks or thunderstorms may be significantly reduced or even fully blocked.

At the same time, closer and important sounds — like human voices, commands, and everyday household noises — remain audible. This allows your dog to stay calm, responsive, and aware of their surroundings.

Your dog may still sense distant sounds like thunder through vibration, but without the sharp, overwhelming volume that often causes fear or anxiety.

The goal isn’t to completely shut out the world, but to reduce stressful noise while keeping comforting and important sounds, like your voice, present.

Are ARPAW earmuffs safe?

Yes. ARPAW earmuffs are non-electronic, lightweight, and designed to apply no direct pressure to the ears. When used correctly, they are safe for extended use under supervision.

For your dog’s safety:

  • Do not leave your dog unattended while wearing the earmuffs

  • Always check that the strap under the neck is not too tight and does not restrict breathing or movement

  • Make sure your dog can breathe comfortably and move freely at all times

Proper fit and supervision ensure your dog remains comfortable, calm, and safe while wearing the earmuffs.
